THE NEXT MORNING, LAUREN and Zoe unstacked the pine chairs in the café. Annie sat in her basket, ‘supervising’.

“So what did Mitch say last night?” Zoe snooped.

“When he called me later?”

“Yes.”

Mitch had arrived around dinner time, his face somber. Lauren had thrown together some pasta with spaghetti sauce, which the guys had wolfed down.

Then Mitch said he had to go back to the station to catch up on paperwork, but he’d call her that evening. Which he did.

“There aren’t any suspects at the moment,” Lauren told her.

“What about Mrs. Wagner?” Zoe asked. “Don’t you think it’s strange she wasn’t there to help clean up?”

“We got there before Father Mike,” Lauren pointed out, “and I’m sure he didn’t do it.”

“Good point.” Zoe nodded. “What about Kyle?”

“Mitch said the waitress remembers him buying the burgers from Gary’s Burger Diner,” Lauren told her. “And he was carrying the burgers in that paper bag.”

“But were there really burgers in there? Maybe he put some paper wads in there to make it look like he’d gone to get burgers.” Zoe narrowed her eyes. “Did Mitch look inside the bag?”

“Of course he did,” Lauren said. “Mitch knows what he’s doing.”

And he’d told her there were two burgers plus fries in that sack.

They finished getting the café ready for their first customer.

Today, Lauren had baked gingerbread cupcakes, as well as lemon poppyseed, and triple chocolate ganache.

“I hope these new Annie mugs sell.” Zoe lined up the pottery she’d made, next to the register. The newest version featured Annie wearing a Santa hat, just like she’d worn for the play.

“I must be psychic, because I created these before Annie volunteered to be Mrs. Claus.”

“You must be,” Lauren teased. She crossed to the oak and glass entrance door and drew back the bolt. Before she could step back, a man barreled through.

“I know you did it.” Kyle’s face was flushed and he looked disheveled. “You killed my brother, and I’m going to prove it!”
